I’m not sure whether it was Tom Reed or Mary Schmitt Boyer that wrote the lead to this Cleveland Plain Dealer article, but the pun made me wince for some reason.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The 1998-99 NBA lockout weighed heavily on everyone involved. Some more than others. Few more than Shawn Kemp.

The piece is ostensibly about out-of-shape NBA players coming back from the lockout that knocked-out 16 games from every team’s season, but I was really impressed with how upfront Kemp was when Mike Fratello asked him about the weight he gained.

The Cavs listed him at 6-10, 280 pounds — a 34-pound increase from the previous season — but then-General Manager Wayne Embry later revealed in his autobiography that Kemp reported to camp at 315 pounds.
“He was really very honest about it,” former Cavs coach Mike Fratello recalled. “I said, ‘Shawn, how did this happen?’ He said, ‘Coach, I didn’t think we were coming back.’”

I’m sympathetic towards Kemp even as he impregnated women all over the country, and gained a ton of weight after Cleveland awarded him a $107 million contract in 1997. He’s deeply flawed, and a lot of his behavior is irresponsible and downright disgraceful, but he never shirked away from his mistakes, or lied, or tried to downplay them (that I can find). There’s something very commendable about that.
I understand if his kids, or their mothers, or the city of Cleveland disagree with me and feel no sympathy for him at all. I would too, if I was in their position.

LMFAOOOOOO!!

fuckyeanba:

I guess Amar’e Stoudemire spent the weekend dressed as King Solomon. If you’re unfamiliar King Solomon, he was David’s son and the final King of the United Monarchy of Israel and Judah. After the split, his patrilineal descendents inherited the power over Judah. He is also the first Temple builder in Jerusalem.
Every time I read something new about Amar’e I like him more, and have lower expectations he’ll bring us a title in New York.
